There was a really good turn out for the July show with close to 200 people.  Both bands and fans had good numbers.  As usual, Howard and his crew prepared and served a  great meal.

The first group to play was the resident Coushatta Ranch Band more commonly known as “Chinquapin Flat.”  Members are Angie Beaubouef-Bass, Glen Beaubouef-Guitar, Jim Glenn-Guitar, Jack Ritter-Mandolin and Dick Joiner-Dobro.  Some of the songs they did were Sharecropper’s Son, Leftover Biscuits, Rock Salt and Nails, My Home’s Across The Blue Ridge Mountains, Everybody’s Reaching Out For Someone, Mississippi and House of Gold.  For an encore performance, they did Better Times A Coming.  Good Show.

Then, the “Wabash Ramblers” came on stage.  Two of them looked like entertainers we had seen earlier on stage!  Members are Lou-Lou Barbor-Banjo, Howdy Barbor-Dobro, Angie Beaubouef-Bass and Glen Beaubouef-Guitar.  They sang Pig In A Pen, Cowboy Yodel, Let It Rain, This Old House, Dan Greene’s Hog Liquor, Little Brown Building, Dance With Me Molly and Blue You Good Dog You.  Then, they told us the history of Wabash Cannonball and did their rendition of it.  They called it Hobo’ Train To Glory.”  The crowd enjoyed that so much, they called for an encore.  The group did a gospel accappelaa number Some Day.  Good Show
Pickin' Grass

The last group to play was “Pickin Grass.” We haven’t seen them at Bellville for a while.  You can always find them at the Oklahoma Community Center the second Saturday of each month.  Members are Ken Holder-Guitar, Ron Sink-Mandolin, Tom York-Bass and Dave Jenkins-Banjo.  Some of the songs they did were Somehow  Tonight, Walkin’ On The Lonely Side Of Life, Some Old Day, House Of Gold, Midnight Special, White Freightliner, Crying My Heart Out (complete with Ron’s original  verse), If That’s The Way You Feel, Mansion On A Hilltop (featuring Tom) and Using My Bible For A Roadmap.  For their encore they did a request from the audience.  Buddy Brockett joined them to sing Take Your Shoes Off Moses.  Good Job.

The June show had a lot of good things going.  Howard and crew cooked and served a great meal.  We had a new bluegrass band show up to play and the Harris County Precinct 4 Bus brought the Mavericks, a senior’s group from St. Justin Martyr Church in Houston.  The bands played to a packed house.

Justin was featured on a Jimmy Fischer song called “Shelley”.  He told us about meeting Saltgrass and how Jimmy made him feel so welcome and invited him to pick with the group.   If you didn’t get the bands web address, it is www.theherzogfamily.com.  Good Show.  We hope they will come back again.

Chinquapin Flats
The last group to play was  the “Chiquapin Flats.” Members are Jim Glenn- Guitar,  Jack Ritter-Mandolin, Angie Beaubouef-Bass,  Glen Beaubouef-Guitar and Dick Joiner-Dobro.  They did a number of songs including, Sharecroppers Son, Left Over Biscuits, My Home’s Across the Blueridge Mountains, Everybody’s Reaching Out For Someone, Rock Salt and Nails, Mississippi, House of Gold, by request, Walls of Time, Big Spike Hammer, Grandpa Was A Carpenter, Wildrose Of The Mountain, I’ll Take The Blame and Pig In A Pen.  They invited Buddy Brockett on stage with his banjo and did a few more songs.  Some of these were Down The Road, 1949, Tennessee Border, Little Georgia Rose, Better Times A Comin and Lay Your Burdens.  As always they put on a  good show!

Jam and Show July 25, 2007

Show Review by:  Joyce Jackson
July brought out a good crowd of people for the monthly show.  We started off with three bands on the schedule to play, but added another one after the show got under way.  The Greer family showed up with instruments, so naturally we assumed they came to play!

The first group to play was “Salt Grass Band.” Members are John Brockett-Guitar, Jimmy Fischer-Banjo, Timmy Fischer-Mandolin and Jim Lowery-Bass.  It was really good to have Timmy there considering only one-week prior, he had to have a stint put in.  Jim was a little slow getting on stage, so they started the show without him.  Buddy was still on stage (introducing the band), so he sang a bit of  Milk Cow Blues.  Then they did Raining In LA, Come On Down To My World, Rocky Top, The Lighthouse, Sunny Side Of The Mountain, Twenty-One Miles, Julianne and for an encore, Lean On You.  Good Show.

The second group to play was ”Wabash Ramblers”. Members are Glen Beaubouef-Guitar, Angie Beaubouef-Bass, LuLu Barbour-Banjo and Howdy Barbour-Dobro.  Wabash Ramblers are working on their first CD.  Some of the songs they did were Pig In A Pen, Let It Rain, This Old House, Rough & Rocky, Riding The Texas Plains, Dan Green’s Hog Liquor, Wayfaring Stranger, Blue (you good dog you), and Waterbound as their encore song.  Good job!

Next on the list was “Chinquipin Flat”.  Chinquipin is also working on recording a CD.  Members of this group are Jim Glenn-Guitar, Jack Ritter-Mandolin, Dick Joiner-Dobro, Angie Beaubouef-Bass and Glen Beaubouef-Guitar.  They entertained us with Way Down Deep in my heart), The Old Homeplace, God Gave Her To Me, I’m Gonna Love You Like There’s No Tomorrow,  I’ll Break Out Again Tonight, Leftover Biscuits, Wildrose Of The Mountain, House of Gold and Hallelujah I'm Ready.  Good Show.

“The Greer Family” came on last.  Members are Lawrence-Bass, Lisa-Guitar, Jordan-Fiddle & Dobro,  Adam-Banjo & Guitar and Mandy-Mandolin.  Some of the songs they did were When The Angels Sing,  The World’s Still Turning (written by Adam), Jesus Hold My Hand, Dueling Banjos, Foggy Mountain Breakdown, The Masters Garden, Blackberry, Sally Johnson, Red Wing, Just Over In The Gloryland and Orange Blossom Special.  Good Show.

Jam and Show June 23, 2007  By:  Joyce Jackson
Attendance was down a bit this month.  The show is always on the 4th Saturday of the month and June had five this year.  I am afraid some people might  not have realized the show was on the 23rd.  If  they show up on the 5th Saturday, maybe the resident Coushatta Band can entertain them for a while.

Jamming in the Stage Room prior to the show.

The Elm Street Band

The first group to play was “Elm Street Band.” They looked an awful lot like Saltgrass with George in for Jim.  Members are John Brockett-Guitar, Jimmy Fischer-Banjo, Timmy Fischer-Mandolin and George Hanson-Bass.  Some of the songs they did were Paint The Town, If That’s The Way You Feel, Rabbit Dog, Mary Of The Wildmoor,  Old Flames, Head Over Heals, I Know What It Means (to be lonesome), Nellie Cain, Montana Cowboy and for an encore, they did Visions of Mother.  Good Show!

The second group to play was ”Chinquapin Flatt”.  These people all live in the park with the exception of Jim.  It sounded like some of the  band members were trying to get him moved out there as well.  Members are Jack Ritter-Mandolin,  Jim Glenn- Guitar, Glen Beaubouf-Guitar, Angie Beaubouf-Bass and Dick Joiner-Dobro.  They entertained us with Kentucky Girl, Up This Hill and Down, Left Over Biscuits, Is It True, The Last Thing On My Mind, House of Gold (an all time favorite), I Overlooked An Orchid, Love Lifted Me (by request), Walls Of Time and for an encore (also by request) Farm In Louisiana.  Good Job!

The last group to play was “Saltgrass”.  It was good to see them back at home after so many months on the road.  Members are Jim Lowery-Bass, Jimmy Fischer-Banjo, Timmy Fischer-Mandolin and John Brockett-Guitar.   They started their show with Raining in LA, then on to Gone Like The Candle In The Wind, The Lighthouse, Good Hearted Woman, 21 Miles and Julianne for Wilma, their biggest and most loyal fan.  They also did Fourth Man In The Fire, Old Commanchero, Rodeo Cowboy, Rueben’s Train with Buddy Brockett and an encore song written by Jimmy Fischer, Stars and Stripes, Tattered and Torn.  Great way to end with Independence Day so close!

Jam and Show May 25, 2007
Many of SCBC fans and bands were gone to Salmon Lake this week-end for the 10th Annual Gospel Bluegrass Festival. We always miss people when they are gone, but tend to have a good time anyway.
The first group to play was “Cindy and Robert.”  Cindy played guitar and Robert played a resonator guitar.  Some of the songs they did were Deep Elm Blues, Wildflowers, Double Holly Pine, High Mountain Meadow, After Texas, Old Flame and two songs written by Robert.  One of them was Nothing to Loose and the other was Tower to Heaven, based on Genesis 2:9.   Good Show.

The second and last group to play was the “SCBC Memorial Week-End Pickers”.  Members are:  Rob Sharp on Guitar, Lisa Bonnett and Jack Ritter on Mandolin, Buddy Brockett on Banjo and Dick Joiner on Dobro.   Some of the songs they did were:  I’m Walking Low, Blue Knight, I’ll Just Stay Around, That Last Old Shovel, My Home On The Range, Mississippi, Rough and Rocky, Grandpa Was A Carpenter, Hideaway, Love Lifted Me, Handsome Molly, Tennessee Border, Down The Road, Blue Moon Of Kentucky, The Pain Of Loving You and Wild Bill Jones. Good Job.

A big thank you to all those who worked so hard to entertain and feed those of us who didn’t go to the festival in Grapeland!
